On December 27, 2009, pro-Democracy Iranians protested against the Iranian government in conjunction with the day of Ashura. Clashes between anti-riot forces and demonstrators occurred in several Iranian cities. Anti-riot forces opened fire on the day of Ashura, the Shiite holy day "symbolically about justice", a day which any kind of violence is forbidden. 15 people was murdered this day, yet official reports from the Iranian government put the death toll at 8, making this the deadliest day of the protests since June.
